Champion Clean Heating: Support AC-to-Heat-Pump Policies Today

<= span style=3D"background-color: rgb(255=2C 255=2C 255)">Replacing gas furn= aces with heat pumps is one of the most powerful actions a homeowner can <= /span>take to reduce their gre= enhouse gas emissions. California has= established a goal of installing six million heat pumps by 2030=2C but we= are not on track to meet this goal. For new construction=2C the state bui= lding code that goes into effect in January strongly encourages heat pumps= =2E But the policy to transition furnaces in existing buildings to heat pump= s has largely stalled.


Counterintuitively=2C the most c= ost-effective policy for transitioning to clean heating may be to focus on= air conditioners. Heat pumps=2C also known as 2-way ACs=2C are essentiall= y a conventional air conditioner with the addition of a reversing valve th= at allows it to switch from cooling to heating. Because of this=2C= 2-way ACs have similar manufacturing and installation costs as convention= al 1-way ACs=2C and can be installed within the same space and using the s= ame electric wiring.


Proposed AC to Heat Pump= policies (known colloquially as AC2HP)=2C which require air conditioner r= eplacements to have a heating mode=2C are popping up in cities across the= state. These policies can help residents save money (by eliminati= ng future furnace replacements) while helping clean the air and address cl= imate change.

California CORE Heavy-Duty Funding Segment Open= s August 19th

The Clean Off-Roa= d Equipment Voucher Incentive Project (CORE) is a streamlined voucher ince= ntive project that helps offset the higher cost of zero-emission technolog= y with a point-of-sale discount.


There is no s= crappage requirement=2C and additional funding is available for charging a= nd fueling infrastructure=2C equipment deployed in disadvantaged communiti= es=2C and small businesses.

Santa Monica City Hall East

Santa Monica City Hall East is a 50=2C000-square-foot m= unicipal extension to the historic 1939 Art Deco City Hall=2C completed in= 2020. Designed to be one of the most sustainable civic buildings in the w= orld=2C it achieved Living Building Challenge certification=E2=80=94the go= ld standard in regenerative design=E2=80=94and operates as a Net Zero Wate= r and Net Zero Energy building.


The facility in= tegrates a number of sustainable strategies=2C helping it achieve exemplar= y performance=2C including:

  • Nearly 15=2C000 ft=C2= =B2 of photovoltaic solar arrays supplying 100% of the building=E2=80=99s= annual energy needs

  • Rainwater capture and treatment system= providing 100% of potable water demand=2C making it the first building in= California permitted to use rainwater in drinking fountains

  • <= p>Composting toilets reducing potable water use by approximately 500=2C000= gallons annually

  • 90% of regularly occupied spaces with acc= ess to daylight and operable windows for natural ventilation

  • <= p>50% reduction in indoor water use compared to baseline standards

  • 95% construction waste diversion rate from landfills through reuse= and recycling
