Stocks are flying in and out of positi= ve territory amid a dizzying array of tariff-related headlines and concern = about a big slump in private-sector hiring during February. The S&P 500, wh= ich erased all its gains since Election Day last night, moved into the gree= n this afternoon after a report suggested the Trump administration could de= lay levies on the auto sector until early April.

The U.S. economy saw a notable softening in p= rivate-sector-job creation last month, suggesting tariff uncertainty and a = pullback in consumer sentiment are hurting hiring in the early months of th= e new Trump administration. Payroll-processing group ADP said around 77,000= jobs were created in the private sector last month, the lowest tally since= July and a sharp pullback from the upwardly revised tally of 186,000 in Ja= nuary. Economists had expected ADP's National Employment Report to show gai= ns of 141,000.
