What's going on: A new rival for ChatGPT has entered, well, th= e chat. R1, an AI assistant developed by Chinese = startup DeepSeek, became the most-downloaded free app in Apple=E2= =80=99s US App Store after its launch over the weekend. The chatbot=E2=80= =99s popularity has sent ripples through the tech world, causing the stock = prices of major AI chipmakers like Nvidia to plummet yesterday. R1 delivers= nearly the same capabilities as OpenAI=E2=80=99s GPT-4, Meta=E2=80=99s Lla= ma, and Google=E2=80=99s Gemini for a fraction of the cost, according to The Washington Post. DeepSeek has also open sourced its AI model, allo= wing others to potentially create their own versions. But the company=E2=80= =99s claims may be too good to be true, according to Axios, and there=E2=80=99s also the possibility of natio= nal security concerns =C3=A0 la TikTok.

What it means: DeepSeek claims= that R1=E2=80=99s development cost just $6 million =E2=80=94 way less than= the tens of billions OpenAI and Microsoft spent on their platforms =E2=80= =94 and that it required far fewer Nvidia chips. If true, it raises questio= ns about whether US investments in AI have been unnecessarily high. The new sc= i-fi thriller series (you can stream the first three episodes on Hulu) was = created by This Is Us mastermind Dan Fogelman and is set in the titu= lar idyllic town where "some of the world's most prominent individuals" res= ide. That includes President Cal Bradford (James Marsden) and Xavier Collin= s (Brown), the secret service agent assigned to protect the president. But = Collins's job becomes much more complicated when the commander-in-chief is = found murdered =E2=80=94 and it just so happens that Collins is the last pe= rson to have seen him alive.
