New and upcoming embodied carbon regulatory and policy landscape=2C pendin=

LEED version 4 introduced the North American market to environmental produ=
ct declarations (EPDs) back in 2013 and helped drive their adoption. Now t=
hey=E2=80=99ve gone mainstream. Data from EPDs=E2=80=94specifically=2C the=
 global warming potential (GWP) of products=E2=80=94are showing up in regu=
lations=2C procurement standards=2C and design tools.

Like any good exploration=2C each answer we get generates more questions.=
 Now that we have GWP numbers for so many products=2C inquiring minds want=
 to know: How reliable are they? What can we use them for? Can they help u=
s get better whole-building LCA results?

LEED v5 picked up the ball and tried to answer some of those questions to=

-Emissions Building definition with the qualifier =E2=80=9CPart 1.=E2=80=
=9D Why? Because it stopped short of addressing embodied carbon and left t=
hat for the sequel. Refrigerant leakage=2C a.k.a. fugitive emissions=2C is=
 also on the back burner.

Protect federal support for climate action

The Inflation Reduction Act is far and away the biggest climate legislatio=
n in U.S. history=2C and it has already motivated change and driven invest=
ment in climate-smart technologies. With a new administration starting in=
 January=2C this historic investment is at risk. But there=E2=80=99s hope=
=2C as many of those investments are happening in states and congressional=
 districts that helped elect the incoming president.
