Arch Tour Fest: E= arvin "Magic" Johnson Recreation Area

Located in the c= ommunity of Willowbrook=2C the 120-acre Earvin =E2=80=9CMagic=E2=80=9D Joh= nson Recreation Area is the largest public open space in South Los Angeles= =2E The park offers a gateway to nature within the city. A new event ce= nter=2C located alongside a rehabilitated series of lakes=2C wetlands and= native uplands=2C serves as the visual centerpiece of a regenerative recr= eational park and a civic center for its unincorporated neighborhood. As a= collective oasis=2C the project demonstrates resilience and social equity= in the conversion of a brown field site and artificial lakes into a socia= l=2C cultural and recreation activity hub. It serves as a national model f= or sustainably rethinking the social and environmental role of parks in un= der-served communities.

During this tour= =2C architect Paul Murdoch and landscape architects Jennifer Zell and Gary= Lai will discuss how the project became a model for transforming an aging= park into a high-performance model of sustainable park design for the 21s= t century.

Kaiser New School of Medicine

 

Kaiser Permanent= e opened its new 80=2C00-square-foot School of Medicine in Pasadena in 202= 0 and achieved LEED Gold the following year! One of its innovative green d= esign features is a transparent building facade that improves indoor envir= onmental quality by allowing daylight into public circulation spaces=2C re= ducing the energy demand needed for cooling and minimizing solar heat gain= s.

Other sustainability achievements for this project include:
- 20% improvement on baseline building performance
- 75% diversion of construction and demolition debris
- 50% reduction in potable landscape water use

This project prioritizes the mental and physical health of building users= in all aspects of its design and creates =E2=80=9Cthe school of medicine= as a laboratory=E2=80=9D through classrooms=2C small group learning areas= =2C collaboration zones=2C outdoor recreation=2C and more!
