Join us for our= final volunteer day in the Survivor=E2=80= =99s Healing Garden at The Reverence Project! We will be building= a kiva with mosaics evocative of the nearby=2C iconic Watts Towers. A fir= e feature will serve as a focal point for this gathering space=2C which wi= ll host healing circles and other restorative justice and peace-building p= ractices.

We hope to integ= rate upcycled materials from throughout LA in the kiva=E2=80=99s mosaic=2C= just as creator Simon Rodia did in Watts Towers. Please consider offering= hope and healing to Watts by bringing an object that symbolizes resilienc= e to you.

Located in the c= ommunity of Willowbrook=2C the 120-acre Earvin =E2=80=9CMagic=E2=80=9D Joh= nson Recreation Area is the largest public open space in South Los Angeles= =2E The park offers a gateway to nature within the city. A new event ce= nter=2C located alongside a rehabilitated series of lakes=2C wetlands and= native uplands=2C serves as the visual centerpiece of a regenerative recr= eational park and a civic center for its unincorporated neighborhood. As a= collective oasis=2C the project demonstrates resilience and social equity= in the conversion of a brown field site and artificial lakes into a socia= l=2C cultural and recreation activity hub. It serves as a national model f= or sustainably rethinking the social and environmental role of parks in un= der-served communities.

During this tour= =2C architect Paul Murdoch and landscape architects Jennifer Zell and Gary= Lai will discuss how the project became a model for transforming an aging= park into a high-performance model of sustainable park design for the 21s= t century.

Retail Design Co= llaborative transformed a vacant Nordstrom Rack into a LEED Platinum and W= ELL Gold-certified 34=2C000-square-foot creative office space for their ne= w retail headquarters in Long Beach. Known as Studio 111=2C this adaptive-= reuse project celebrates innovative design practices and even has an in-ho= use Living Lab that generates real-time sustainability metrics on building= systems.

Some other green achievements for the project were:

- 35% reduction in lighting power density
- 75% daylighting of occupied space
- 30% reduction of indoor potable water use
- 75% diversion rate for construction debris
- 30% salvaged or repurposed furniture
- 77% Energy Star-qualified equipment
