Gas price= s trend up for the first time in months as a bitter economic cocktail brews=

The streak=E2=80=99s over=E2=80=A6= and pump anxiety returns: Last week US gas prices rose f= or the first time in nearly 100 days. On Wednesday, the average price of a = good old-fashioned gallon ticked up to $3.68. That=E2=80=99s nowhere near t= he $5 average in mid-June, but prices might keep rising. A few things that = could make the energy crisis worse:

    War: On Wednesday, Russia= n President Putin declared a =E2=80=9Cpartial mobilization=E2=80=9D of 300K= reservists to fight in Ukraine =E2=80=94 and even made a nuclear threat.
  • Weather: Hurricane s= eason could cause supply disruptions, with Hurricane Fiona hitting Category= 4 on Wednesday.

A bitter cocktail=E2=80=A6 Ga= s is just one ingredient. At the base we have inflation, which is weakening= consumer demand as it sticks near 40-year highs. To fight the inflation Gr= inch, we have something just as painful: soaring interest rates. Last week = the Fed approved its third =E2=80=9Cjumbo=E2=80=9D hike and signaled more a= re likely (several other central banks also lifted rates). Mix in a looming= energy crisis, and the dark-and-stormy combo is complete:

  • Earlier thi= s month: Russia=E2=80=99s Gazprom indefinitely shut down n= atural-gas flows to Europe, blaming Western sanctions. This year Europe=E2= =80=99s electricity bills have nearly 4X=E2=80=99d.
  • Last week: Germany announced it would nati= onalize Uniper (its biggest Russian-gas importer) as Europ= e races to store supplies to keep homes warm this winter.
THE TAKEAWAY

Uncertainty hurts most, but does help some=E2=80=A6 While most sectors have tanked, energy stocks like Occidental Petroleum and <= strong>Valero have ha= d a banner year. Considering gas prices, it=E2=80=99s no surprise that ener= gy has been the best-performing sector, followed by utilities. Meanwhile, g= rowth stocks that rely heavily on the prospect of big future retur= ns (think: tech) have plunged. A dollar today is worth more than a dollar i= n a year, and rising interest rates incentivize investors to earn off their= cash now (think: savings accounts, bonds). Meanwhile, some invest= ors are turning to slower-growing companies with historically stable earnin= gs vs. unprofitable growth companies.

Gas prices trend up for the firs= t time in months as a bitter economic cocktail brews

The streak=E2=80=99s over=E2=80=A6 and pump anxi= ety returns: Last week US gas prices rose for the first time in nearl= y 100 days. On Wednesday, the average price of a good old-fashioned gallon = ticked up to $3.68. That=E2=80=99s nowhere near the $5 average in mid-June,= but prices might keep rising. A few things that could make the energy cris= is worse:

  • War: On Wednesday, Russian President Putin declared= a =E2=80=9Cpartial mobilization=E2=80=9D of 300K reservists to fight in Uk= raine =E2=80=94 and even made a nuclear threat.
  • Weather: Hurricane season could cause supply d= isruptions, with Hurricane Fiona hitting Category 4 on Wednesday.

A bitter cocktail=E2=80=A6 Gas is just one ingredient. = At the base we have inflation, which is weakening consumer demand as it sti= cks near 40-year highs. To fight the inflation Grinch, we have something ju= st as painful: soaring interest rates. Last week the Fed approved its third= =E2=80=9Cjumbo=E2=80=9D hike and signaled more are likely (several other c= entral banks also lifted rates). Mix in a looming energy crisis, and the da= rk-and-stormy combo is complete:

  • Earlier this month: Russia= =E2=80=99s Gazprom indefinitely shut down natural-gas flows to E= urope, blaming Western sanctions. This year Europe=E2=80=99s electricity bi= lls have nearly 4X=E2=80=99d.
  • Last week: Germany announced it would nationalize Uniper= (its biggest Russian-gas importer) as Europe races to store suppl= ies to keep homes warm this winter.

Un= certainty hurts most, but does help some=E2=80=A6 While most secto= rs have tanked, energy stocks like Occidental Petroleum and Valero have had a banner year. Considering gas p= rices, it=E2=80=99s no surprise that energy has been the best-performing se= ctor, followed by utilities. Meanwhile, growth stocks that rely heavily on = the prospect of big future returns (think: tech) have plunged. A d= ollar today is worth more than a dollar in a year, and rising interest rate= s incentivize investors to earn off their cash now (think: savings= accounts, bonds). Meanwhile, some investors are turning to slower-growing = companies with historically stable earnings vs. unprofitable growth compani= es.
