Everyone on this Caribbe= an island understands that the phrase “en Mar=C3=ADa&= #x201D;—in Mar=C3=ADa—refers not to a place, but to a pl= ace in time, writes Laura P=C3=A9rez Sanchez fo= r National Geographic on the five-year anniversary of Hurricane Maria: the = long, miserable months Puerto Ricans endured during the aftermath of the wo= rst natural disaster to strike the island in modern history=2E

For = Gabriella B=C3=A1ez, a Puerto Rican photographe= r based in San Juan, the time is a particularly personal one: she lost her = father to suicide in the wake of the storm=2E

Her intimate portrait= s of storm survivors paired with the treasured possessions of their loved o= nes (some, pictured above)—wedding rings, bongos, a puzzle piece= 014;weave a story of memory and profound grief=2E

For 25-year-old B= =C3=A1ez, the project was moving=2E “Oscillating between grief and l= aughter, connecting with these families and sharing our stories of grief tr= ansformed into a place of healing for each other,” she says=2E Today= the visual pairings have evolved into a more personal project on grief: Ojala Nos Encontremos en el Mar, which means: Hopefully, We’ll Find Each Other in the Sea=2E =
