As a middle school science teacher= at I.S. 68 in Canarsie for 21 years=2C Seanelle has long understood the g= rave threat of climate change and the impact it will have on future genera= tions. With that in mind=2C Seanelle joined the I.S. 68 Eco Team= to infuse environmental education into the curriculum. The team=2C which= Seanelle leads=2C is comprised of as many as 100 students=2C and by engag= ing them in real-world sustainability projects like onsite gardening=2C pl= astic=2C glass and textile recycling=2C and community hydroponics programs= =2C she has helped educate them about environmental issues.

The New York Times recently s= poke with members of the real estate community=2C city officials and Urban= Green CEO John Mandyck on complying with Local Law 97.

Nearly all the 50=2C000 buildings subject to the law will be in compliance= for the first deadline=2C January 1=2C 2024=2C according to city estimate= s. But that leaves 2=2C700 buildings across the city that need to make imp= rovements over the next 16 months to avoid hefty fines.

The second deadline in 2030 is a heavier lift and will require significant= ly reduced carbon emissions for many buildings. Urban Green is helping sha= pe implementation=E2=80=94including compliance options=2C metrics and carb= on coefficients=E2=80=94through several LL97 working groups convened by th= e Department of Buildings.
