It started with a simple connection=2E= I first heard of Marie Ann Han Yoo’s wo= rk through a Facebook group called Asian Creative Network=2E

Her da= ughter, Stephanie Han, had posted about her mot= her’s vivid breadth of photos featuring scenes of postwar Korea, all= in color=2E The kicker? Yoo, now 85, was debuting as a photographer 65 yea= rs after these images were taken=2E

I was immediately intrigued, no= t only by the historical significance of these images, but also by the oppo= rtunity to witness Korea during this time through the eyes of a fellow Kore= an American woman=2E My grandparents could have witnessed these street scen= es, such as these three finely dressed grandfathers (above)=2E

How = did these photos come to light more than six decades later? Yoo found a sui= tcase in Memphis when she was moving=2E Inside it were slides—her= stunning (and rare) color images taken in 1956-57, in the aftermath of= South Korea’s devastating and traumatic conflict with the North=2E = (Below, a portrait of Yoo then, with her camera=2E)

Yoo, who spent most of her life as a homemaker, characterizes her wo= rk as travel photography=2E “I wanted to capture that particular mom= ent in time,” she said=2E
