My kids are obsessed with the fox den in our front yard=2E
So, inspired by Nat Geo photographer Corey Arnold<= /strong> and his latest feature (Why cities are going wild), I borrowed a “camera trap,” or a motion-triggered ca= mera, from our photo engineers and got to setting it up near their den=2E
As I soon learned, endless variables can foil your best-laid photo pl= ans when you leave a camera trap alone—think of theft, extreme weath= er conditions, the flash scaring the animal=2E And photographing wildlife i= s not an appointment-based endeavor=2E (Above, a bear emerging from a den u= nder an abandoned house in South Lake Tahoe, California; below, raccoons st= anding at attention at night in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park=2E)

I'd already identified a prime location for my camera trap but knowing whe= re the fill-in-the-blank creatures will show up is critical—and can = be hard to determine=2E For this, Corey, also a Nat Geo = Explorer, had a little help from his friends=2E

“One of the great assets of being a Nat Geo photographer is that ev= eryone wants to help,” Corey tells me=2E He posted an inquiry on Ins= tagram: “Let me know if you have bears in your backyard=2E” B= oom! Hundreds of responses=2E

Corey’s ultimate social connect= ion was an unofficial Tahoe bear expert, who messaged that he could introduce him to = bears living under local homes=2E This resulted in some of his most success= ful images=2E

On the story since 2019, Corey’s sense of humor= —and patience—has paid off=2E Once “a bear unscrewed t= he flash from its stand,” Corey reported nonchalantly=2E

But = when it all comes together, there is nothing more rewarding=2E
