Vacations are often framed as our chance to shed the confines of the everyday. But what happens when the itch to escape can’t be scratched by a short trip? For the curious, I recently wrote an essay about the adventure of moving my family for two years (pre-pandemic) from Brooklyn to a small surf town in Mexico. The experience may not be for everyone, but for us it was transformative.
For those looking for a less permanent Mexican escape, I offer up Verana, an artist-designed hotel in the jungle-covered hills above Yelapa, a town accessible only by boat. The service was stellar, and you’ll have to read to the end to learn what kind of visitor came into my room at night.
