A = colleague once joked that if you want to help archaeologists, stop brushing= your teeth=2E That’s because chemical clues in preserved plaque and= enamel reveal so much about the lives of fossilized humans=2E Similarl= y, shape and wear patterns can indicate which species once sported particul= ar teeth and what they were likely eating=2E That’s why scientists a= re abuzz this week over the discovery of a partial molar (pi= ctured above) from a cramped cave in the mountains of Laos=2E

= If they are correct, it’s the southernmost fossil evidence yet from = a group of mysterious human relatives called the Denisovans=2E

B= ased on robust DNA data, Denisovans mingled with early modern humans mor= e than 130,000 years ago—most modern people of Asian descent bear th= eir genetic fingerprints=2E But fossil evidence had been found in only two = sites—o= ne in Siberia; one on the Tibetan Plateau=2E

The latest discove= ry indicates Denisovans had a much wider range, Maya Wei= -Haas and Michael Greshko report=2E The exciting find also underscores the scientific impor= tance of Laos’s fossil-rich caves (pictured below)=2E “I do have to say, we’re so proud,” says Souliphane Boualaphane with Laos’s Ministry of = Information, Culture, and Tourism=2E
