Capturing underwater beauty is rout= ine for David Doubilet and J= ennifer Hayes, who have explored some of the most spectacular reef= s on the planet=2E Yet a colony of garden eels they encountered off the Phi= lippines coast brought back memories=2E “I began my career at National Geographic in 1971 with a story on garden eels in th= e Red Sea,” said Doubilet, a Nat Geo Explorer= =2E Taking these images, he said, “was like coming home=2E” <= br>
Garden eels are both social and shy=2E They live in individual burro= ws yet form colonies and rise together out of their burrows to feed on plan= kton carried by the current=2E (Pictured above, a two-spot wrasse and a cor= nerfish, unthreatening to the eels, swim through a colony=2E)

“It’s mesmerizing to watch hundreds of eels waving and undul= ating in an ancient exotic dance,” says Doubilet=2E Yet “that= ends abruptly when the eels detect the slightest movement of an unwelcome = intruder=2E The vast colony vanishes back into the sand as if it never exis= ted=2E”

To capture the scene above, the photographers had to= —quite literally—disappear=2E

“Jennifer settle= d on the Trojan Horse strategy,” Doubilet explains=2E Hayes placed a= rock the same size and color of their camera housing near the edge of the = colony and left it for a day=2E The eels apparently accepted the rockȁ= 4;and rose from their burrows=2E The next morning, she put the camera housi= ng there, left—and then filmed=2E
