Before Russia’s brutal invasion of Ukraine, Germany had been spendi= ng $200 million a day on oil and gas from Russia, its primary energy suppli= er=2E Austria, Poland, and France were among other heavily dependent nation= s=2E Moscow’s unprovoked attack and its slaughter of civilians have = prompted European sanctions on the Kremlin—and turbocharged the regi= on’s efforts to cut its addiction to Russian fuel=2E

Germany= and Poland both have pledged to end Russian oil purchases by the end of th= e year, and they and other countries are accelerating a transition to renew= able energy sources like wind (pictured above, wind turbines= under construction in Germany)=2E In the meantime, they’re see= king natural gas from other suppliers, including the United States=2E
