<= /em>Anyone who’s taken a stroll through a neighborhood in North = America has likely encountered the wrath of Canada geese<= /a> parents=2E These up-to-20-pound birds are feisty defenders of their you= ng, and will honk or charge any interloper, human or otherwise=2E Throughou= t history, humans harnessed that aggression to their benefit, using geese t= o watch over warehouses of whiskey or warn of Roman invaders=2E

Now= , China is putting its domestic geese (one pictured above) on patrol along its 300-mile border with Vietnam=2E Their mission: Stop= coronavirus from entering the country=2E Reinforcing this feathered garris= on are about 400 guard dogs=2E The animals are part of maintaining China&#x= 2019;s zero-COVID policy=2E

Is it working? In December, a goose all= egedly honked the alarm to help catch two people illegally crossing the bor= der, a state-funded website reported=2E Chinese officials did not respo= nd to National Geographic’s request to confirm t= he event=2E Whether or not geese can help control the pandemic, the birds w= ill likely be an ally—and an annoying neighbor—for centuries = to come=2E
