It=E2=80=99s Earth Day and nature=E2=80=99s hur= ting.

Give it to me straight.

Earlier this month, a UN report<= /a> found the world isn=E2=80=99t doing enough to limit global warming to 1= .5 degrees Celsius (above pre-industrial levels). A study found cyclones in= southern Africa became more severe. Most recently, devastating floods in <= a href=3D"https://link.theskimm.com/click/27424143.283065/aHR0cHM6Ly9za2ltb= XRoLmlzLzN2M0NUZHk/5bae87c32ddf9c633b058037Bf424ddfe" style=3D"color: #2C2C= 2C; text-decoration: underline #008280 solid; text-decoration: underline; t= ext-decoration-thickness: 1px; text-underline-offset: 4px; text-decoration-= color: #008280;">South Africa left more than 440 dead. Across Asia, 57 million people were affected by climate disasters in = 2021. In the US, debris from disasters (think: hurric= anes and wildfires) could be posing health risks to local communities. And = more than 4 in 10 Americans live in counties that wer= e impacted by climate disasters last year.

What=E2= =80=99s being done?

President Bide= n=E2=80=99s thinking green. He pledged to cut greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2030. The US officially = rejoined the Paris climate deal reaffirming its pro= mise to limit global warming. But not everyone=E2=80=99s on the same page. = During last year=E2=80=99s COP26, I= ndia and China weakened their pledge to =E2=80=9Cphase out=E2=80=9D coa= l use. More than 100 leaders agreed to address deforestation and slash meth= ane emissions by at least 30% within the next decade. TBD if that=E2=80=99l= l be enough.

Climate change will affect everyone. But low-i= ncome families are at the greatest risk for natural disasters. Scientis= ts say =E2=80=98it=E2=80=99s now or never,=E2=80=99 and that we've got unti= l 2030 to get things back on track =E2=80=94 or the impacts could be irreve= rsible. That means making major changes. Like phasing out coal, cutting met= hane emissions (which warms the planet 80 times more quickly than CO2), and= planting more trees to remove extra carbon from the air. There are also things we can all do in our day-to-day that could have = an impact. That includes everything from traveling greene= r to choosing vegetables over meat =E2=80=94 and = even shopping sustainably. Don=E2=80=99t forget to re= duce, reuse, and recycle.

Welcome to our series on= abortion rights and restrictions. theSkimm is tracking state actions in th= e lead-up to a landmark Supreme Court decision expected by July. Here=E2=80= =99s the latest=E2=80=A6

Yesterday, a federal judge temporarily blocke= d Kentucky's new abortion law. The legislation went into effect last we= ek after the state=E2=80=99s GOP-majority legislature ove= rrode a veto from Gov. Andy Beshear (D). The law bann= ed most abortions after 15 weeks. And other requirements prevented the = state's two abortion clinics from performing the procedure. Now, both clini= cs are reportedly planning to resume this week. A Planned Parenthood offici= al called it a win, but said they will keep fighting for "patients=E2=80=99= right to basic health."

Here=E2=80=99s where states stand on abortion= . A ruling from the Supreme Court on the fate of Roe v Wade is expected within three months.

The F= rench presidential election. French President Emmanuel Macron is facing= off against far-right candidate Marine Le Pen for the French presidency. I= f this match-up sounds familiar, that=E2=80=99s because it is. In 2017, middle of the road Macron defeated Le Pen for the presid= ency by a large margin. Under Macron, France has stoo= d strong behind the EU and has supported issues like climate change. He's e= ven called for more efficient deportations of those who=E2=80=99ve been den= ied entry to the EU. On a global scale, Macron=E2=80=99s called for better = cooperation between NATO members and has tried to negotiate between Ukraine= and Russia (with little success). Macron=E2=80=99s approval rating is hove= ring between 41-43%. And French citizens have grown frustrated over issues = like inflation, proposed vaccine mandates, and the war in Ukraine. All of t= his has politicians saying=E2=80=A6

Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL). Yesterd= ay, Florida decided to strip Disney of its special status, which allowed th= e company to operate as an independent government. This all stems from FL= =E2=80=99s Parental Rights in Education law (aka the =E2= =80=9CDon't Say Gay=E2=80=9D law). Last month, DeSantis signed the legi= slation which blocked public schools from discussing sexual orientation or = gender identity with kids K-3. The law has been met with = pushback =E2=80=94 including from Disney. Fast forward to this week, th= e governor urged Republican state lawmakers to remove the 1967 status. Yest= erday, legislators did just that. The bill would erase Disney=E2=80=99s spe= cial district on June 1, 2023=E2=80=A6pending the governor=E2=80=99s signat= ure.

Puerto Rico. Yesterday, the Supreme Court ruled= that the US territory would continue to be excluded from the Supplemental = Security Income program (SSI). The program provides financial assistance fo= r low-income, elderly, disabled, and blind Americans =E2=80=94 and doesn't = apply to US territories. PR sued, arguing the exclusion unconstitutionally = discriminated against them.
