For centuries, Indigenous communities in British C= olumbia relied on hunting mountain caribou for survival, but dwindling herd= s have meant that recent generations of the communities hardly see caribou = and have never hunted them=2E Now, two First Nations have turned their focu= s to successfully increasing the numbers of the severely depleted Klinse-Za= herd=2E

To do that, they have taken pregnant caribou to pens guard= ed from the predators=2E The calves are born and are nurtured there, and th= en are returned to the wild when they can stand=2E The First Nations in the= western Canadian province also have, reluctantly, had to cull some wolves,= the caribou’s main predator=2E

The Klinse-Za herd has tripl= ed in size over the past nine years, marking a huge gain for the caribou in= B=2EC=2E—and a point of pride for Roland Willson= , chief of West Moberly First Nations=2E ȁ= C;In saving caribou,” he tells Nat Geo, “we’r= e saving ourselves=2E”
